For a TV, speaker and phones at a tailgate, the best portable power station is a 500 to 800 Wh unit you can carry in one hand; add a 12 V fridge cooler or a coffee maker and a 1 kWh unit around 27 lb is the right size. Kettles, air fryers and microwaves need about 1,650 W or more of continuous output, which only 1 kWh-class and larger units have. The picks below come from our sizing engine, run on five common tailgate setups.

How much power does a tailgate setup use?
Energy at the device for one game day, from our appliance data. Running anything on AC also keeps the inverter on, which adds standby draw for as long as it's switched on.

Can it run a kettle, blender or microwave?
Running watts against the median continuous rating of current models near each size, with the 10% headroom our quiz uses. Battery size barely matters here: a kettle boil uses little energy, but it needs the power all at once.

We have no reliable data for blenders, so they're not listed: compare the label wattage with the station's continuous rating and leave room for the motor's start-up. More in can a power station run a microwave.
Why does boost mode not solve the kettle problem?
Some small stations advertise a boost figure (X-Boost, Power Lifting, SurgePad) well above their rating. Boost lowers the voltage so a heating element runs at the station's rated power instead of its own, so a kettle on a 300 W unit heats at 300 W and takes several times longer. It does nothing for a blender: makers say boost is for heating devices, and motors stall at low voltage. Details in what surge watts mean.
What should you carry from the parking spot?
Weight matters more at a tailgate than almost anywhere, because you carry it from the trunk and back after the game. A typical 300 Wh station weighs about 9 lb, an easy one-hand carry, but with the inverter on all day it runs the TV, speaker and phones for only about 6.1 h of a 10-hour game day. A typical 1 kWh unit is about 27 lb, still manageable with a handle. Units near 40 lb and up get heavy across a parking lot, so buy that size only if you need a full day of cooling or cooking.
How do you keep it going for the whole day?
- Run the cooler on 12 V. A 12 V compressor fridge plugged into the station's car socket skips the inverter. Check the station has a car socket; the engine above only picks models that do for the fridge setups.
- Charge phones on USB and switch the AC outlets off when the TV is off, so the inverter's standby draw stops.
- Top up on the drive. A car's 12 V socket puts back about 100 W with the engine running; see how to charge a power station from a car.
- Keep it dry and shaded. Under the canopy, off wet pavement, vents clear. Manuals warn against direct sun and high heat. The Jackery Explorer 1500 Ultra is rated IP65 with its lids closed; most models have no water rating.

What people actually ask
What size power station do I need for tailgating?
A TV and speaker for four hours use about 240 Wh at the devices, so with phones and the inverter's standby over a 10-hour day, a 500 to 800 Wh unit covers the game. Add a 12 V fridge cooler for the day or a coffee maker and you want about 1 kWh, which also brings the 1,800 W-class inverter that hot drinks need.
Can a power station run a blender or kettle at a tailgate?
A kettle draws around 1,500 W, so it needs a station rated at least 1,650 W continuous; typical 300 Wh units supply about 300 W, typical 1 kWh units 1,800 W. For a blender, compare the wattage on its label with the station's continuous rating and leave headroom, since it has a motor. Boost modes help heaters only, never motors.
Is a power station better than a generator for tailgating?
For TVs, speakers, phones and a cooler, usually yes: it's nearly silent, needs no fuel and makes no exhaust next to your group. Honda lists its EU2200i inverter generator at about 48 dBA at a quarter load and 57 dBA at full load. A generator still wins for long days of high-wattage cooking.
Can I recharge a power station from my car at the game?
Yes, from the 12 V socket with the engine running, but it's slow: about 100 W, roughly a kilowatt-hour per 10 hours of driving. The drive to and from the game tops up a small station; don't idle the car in a crowded lot just to charge.
Can a power station get rained on?
Most aren't built for it, so keep it under the canopy or in the trunk, off wet ground. Manuals ask you to keep units dry and their vents clear. The Jackery Explorer 1500 Ultra is an exception with an IP65 rating, but only with all its lids closed.
Who should buy which
- TV, speaker and phones: a 500 to 800 Wh unit in one hand; a 300 Wh unit covers a short pregame. See the small power station picks for the lightest options.
- Add a 12 V fridge cooler: about 1 kWh with a car socket, still under 25 lb.
- Hot coffee or a kettle: a 1 kWh-class unit with 1,800 W or more continuous.
- Doubleheaders and cooking: 1.5 to 2 kWh, and accept the weight; the camping picks cover similar setups.
The bottom line
Size a tailgate station by two things: the biggest single appliance, which sets the continuous watts, and how many hours the TV and cooler run, which sets the watt-hours. For TV, speaker and phones, a light 500 to 800 Wh unit is enough; for a cooler or coffee, a 1 kWh unit. Try your own gear in the sizing quiz, check runtimes in the runtime calculator, and compare weights in the comparison chart.
