For a typical top-freezer fridge, the best portable power station is a 1 kWh-class unit with at least 1,200 W of surge if you need it overnight (our engine picks the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2, about 15 h), or a 2 kWh-class unit for a full day (the Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 2, about 28 h). French-door and side-by-side fridges use more energy, so step up to about 3 kWh for a day. Every pick below comes from our sizing engine, run on that fridge and outage length, so each shows the runtime behind it. For runtimes by station size, see how long a power station runs a refrigerator.

Why is surge the first thing to check?
Capacity decides how long the fridge runs; surge decides whether it starts at all. A full-size refrigerator compressor pulls about 1,200 W for a moment when it kicks on, according to generator and utility wattage tables, even though it runs at roughly 160 W. A station whose surge rating falls short shuts off with an overload warning every time the compressor starts. Of the 42 current models with AC outlets we track, 37 list enough surge for one fridge.
Two compressors are harder. With a fridge running and a chest freezer starting, the station needs about 1,360 W of surge, and twice the daily energy of the fridge alone, roughly. Boost modes like EcoFlow's X-Boost or BLUETTI's Power Lifting lower the voltage for heating appliances and do nothing for a compressor; the surge watts guide explains the difference.
Which setting turns your fridge off overnight?
Turn off ECO or energy-saving mode before you rely on a station for a fridge. Between compressor cycles a fridge draws almost nothing, and many stations switch their AC outlets off when the load stays low. Jackery's Explorer 1000 v2 manual says its energy-saving mode, on by default, turns outputs off after 12 hours if the AC load is 25 W or less. BLUETTI's ECO mode, also on by default, shuts AC off below about 40 W on the AC70P. You find the food warm in the morning with plenty of battery left. Find the setting in the app or on the screen now, while the power is on.
How do you choose between the picks?
- Read the fridge's EnergyGuide label. Divide its kWh per year by 365 for kWh per day; if it's well above the medians in the table, size up.
- Pick the outage you actually get. Overnight outages suit a 1 kWh unit you can carry. Storm outages that run for days call for a stationary unit with expansion batteries, or a smaller one recharged by solar or a generator outdoors.
- Count everything else on the station. Wi-Fi, phones and lights add up over a day; the home backup picks size the whole list.
- Stretch the battery. Ready.gov says a closed fridge keeps food cold for about four hours without power, so running it in shifts with a fridge thermometer can roughly double what a battery covers.

What people actually ask
What size power station do I need for a refrigerator?
For a typical top-freezer fridge, a 1 kWh-class unit covers a night: our engine's pick, the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2, runs one for about 15 h. A full day moves to the 2 kWh class, and a French-door model for a day to about 3 kWh, because it uses roughly half again as much energy.
Can any power station start a refrigerator?
No. A full-size fridge compressor needs about 1,200 W for a moment at start-up in utility and generator tables, so the station's surge rating has to clear that. 37 of the 42 current models with AC outlets we track do. Boost modes such as X-Boost don't count: they only help heating appliances.
Why does my power station turn the fridge off at night?
Almost always the ECO or energy-saving mode. Between compressor cycles the fridge draws almost nothing, and some stations then switch their AC outlets off. Jackery's Explorer 1000 v2 manual says its energy-saving mode, on by default, turns outputs off after 12 hours if the AC load stays at 25 W or less; BLUETTI's ECO mode cuts AC below about 40 W on the AC70P. Turn it off before an outage.
Do I need a UPS mode to run a fridge?
No. Motor loads like a fridge ride through the 10 to 30 ms switchover of a station's UPS mode; at worst the compressor restarts. What matters at switchover is the start-up surge, so the surge rating still has to cover it. UPS mode is worth paying for if a CPAP, router or computer shares the station.
Can I run a fridge and a freezer on one power station?
Yes, if both capacity and surge cover them. A top-freezer fridge and a chest freezer use about 1.6 kWh a day together, and if one compressor starts while the other runs, the station needs about 1,360 W of surge. For a full day that points to a 3 kWh-class unit.
Who should buy which
- Short outages and a typical fridge: a 1 kWh-class unit with at least 1,200 W of surge, such as the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2.
- Day-long outages: about 2 kWh for a top-freezer fridge (the Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 2), about 3 kWh for a French-door model (the Jackery HomePower 3000).
- A fridge and a freezer: 3 kWh-class with surge for two compressors.
- Multi-day storms: an expandable stationary unit, or a smaller unit plus solar; see the hurricane plan and winter storm plan.
The bottom line
Buy for your fridge's daily kWh and your usual outage length, check that the surge rating clears about 1,200 W, and switch ECO mode off. That means a 1 kWh unit for a night, about 2 kWh for a day and 3 kWh or more for big fridges or several days. The sizing quiz runs the same engine on your exact devices, and the runtime calculator shows how long each model lasts.
