For most apartments, the best portable power station is a 1 kWh-class unit around 27 lb: it runs indoors with no fumes, carries up a flight of stairs, and keeps Wi-Fi, phones, lights or a CPAP going through a night. Step up to about 2 kWh only if you need the fridge overnight and can manage around 42 lb. The picks below come from our sizing engine, run on five common apartment setups, so each shows the runtime behind it.

Is a power station safe indoors?
It makes no exhaust, so there's no carbon monoxide, which is the reason it's the realistic backup option in an apartment at all. That doesn't make it maintenance-free. The manuals ask for a well-ventilated spot when charging, clear fan openings, nothing stacked on top and a dry location. Use the supplied charger and cables. Fire is rare but real, so buy a model listed to UL 2743 by a recognized testing lab, keep its firmware updated (recent big-brand recalls were fixed that way), and stop using any unit that swells, smells, pops or gets unusually hot. Keep it where it won't block your way out.
A gas generator is the opposite case. Ready.gov says generators belong outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages, and CPSC counts about 85 US deaths a year from portable-generator carbon monoxide. In an apartment, that rules them out. The power station vs generator guide covers the trade-offs for houses.
How much power does an apartment outage take?
Energy at the device for one day, from our appliance data. Anything on AC also keeps the inverter on, about 12 W of standby for a mid-size unit, around the clock.
| Device | Per day |
|---|---|
| Wi-Fi router and modem, all day | 360 Wh |
| Two phones | 40 Wh |
| Two LED lamps, 6 hours | 120 Wh |
| Laptop, 4 hours on USB-C | 240 Wh |
| CPAP with humidifier, 8 hours | 362 Wh |
| Full-size fridge (top freezer) | 990 Wh |
Which models are easiest to carry up stairs?
In an outage the elevator may be out too. These current models weigh 30 lb or less and still supply at least 1,000 W, ranked by watt-hours per pound.
| Model | Capacity | Weight | Wh per lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 | 1,024 Wh | 23.8 lb | 43 |
| Jackery HomePower 1000 Plus v2 | 1,024 Wh | 23.8 lb | 43 |
| Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 | 1,024 Wh | 24.9 lb | 41 |

| EcoFlow DELTA 3 Classic | 1,024 Wh | 26.7 lb | 38 |
| EcoFlow DELTA 2 | 1,024 Wh | 27 lb | 38 |
| Anker SOLIX C1000 (Gen 1) | 1,056 Wh | 28.44 lb | 37 |
| EcoFlow DELTA 3 | 1,024 Wh | 27.6 lb | 37 |
Weights from maker spec pages. A typical 2 kWh unit weighs about 42 lb; see every model in the comparison chart.
Can you charge it with solar on a balcony?
Yes, with caveats. Check your lease and building rules before putting a panel on a balcony or railing, and secure it so wind can't move it. Then the sun decides. A 200 W folding panel delivers about 140 W in real sun, so it puts back 90% of the Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 2 in about 2.9 days at the US annual average of 4.5 peak sun hours, and about 4.4 days at a winter 3. A balcony that faces north or sits in the shade of the building gets far less, and shading even part of a panel cuts its output more than the shaded area suggests. Keep the panel fully in the sun and the station indoors. The panel charges the station only; nothing should ever connect the station to your apartment's wiring or a wall outlet. The solar panel sizing guide has the full formula.
What to set up before an outage
- Plug the router in through the station so a fast switchover keeps Wi-Fi up. See UPS vs EPS for what 10 and 20 ms mean.
- Turn off ECO or energy-saving mode for a fridge or CPAP. These modes switch AC off when the load is small, which a fridge between cycles or a CPAP overnight can trigger.
- For a CPAP: this is power planning, not medical advice. Ask your doctor and the device maker about backup runtime, use the maker's DC cable if there is one, and register with your utility's medical program, but don't count on it to keep your power on.
- Keep it charged. Top it up every few months and before storm season; see storage and cold weather.

What people actually ask
Is it safe to use a portable power station inside an apartment?
Yes, in the way that matters most: a battery power station burns no fuel, so it makes no carbon monoxide, unlike a gas generator. The manuals still ask for a ventilated spot with clear fan openings, dry conditions and the supplied charger. Buy a model listed to UL 2743 by a recognized testing lab, and stop using any unit that swells, smells or gets unusually hot.
What size power station do I need for an apartment?
For Wi-Fi, phones and a couple of lamps, about 520 Wh a day at the devices, so a 700 Wh to 1 kWh unit covers a night with room to spare. A full-size fridge overnight needs a little more than a 1 kWh unit once inverter standby is counted, so our engine moves to the 1.5 to 2 kWh class. A full day of everything takes about 2.5 kWh, so the engine picks 3 kWh-class units for headroom.
Can I use a gas generator at my apartment?
Not safely. Ready.gov says generators must run outdoors and at least 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages, which a balcony or parking spot next to the building can't provide. Portable generators kill about 85 people a year in the US through carbon monoxide, mostly when run in or near a home.
Can I charge a power station with a solar panel on my balcony?
Often, if your lease and building rules allow it. A 200 W panel gives about 140 W in real sun, so it refills 90% of the Anker SOLIX C2000 Gen 2 in roughly 2.9 days at 4.5 peak sun hours, longer in winter or with shade. The panel only charges the station; it never connects to your apartment's wiring.
Will a power station keep my Wi-Fi on when the power goes out?
Yes, if the router and modem are plugged into it before the outage and its switchover is fast. Most current models switch in 10 to 20 milliseconds, which routers generally ride through. Service can still drop in a wide outage if your provider's own network loses power.
Who should buy which
- Wi-Fi, phones and lights for short outages: a 700 Wh to 1 kWh unit you can carry in one hand. Smaller still is fine for phones alone; see small power stations.
- A CPAP or a workday at home: a 1 kWh unit with a 10 to 20 ms switchover.
- The fridge overnight: about 2 kWh, the heaviest you'll want on stairs, with enough surge to start the compressor; see surge watts.
- Full days in a building with an elevator: 2.5 to 3 kWh on wheels; see home backup picks.
The bottom line
In an apartment, the right power station is the one you can carry and run indoors: usually a 1 kWh-class unit for Wi-Fi, lights and a CPAP, or about 2 kWh if the fridge has to stay cold overnight. Check your lease before adding a balcony panel, and turn off ECO mode for anything that must keep running. For your own devices, the sizing quiz runs the same engine, and the runtime calculator shows how long each lasts.
